What causes off-wheel balancing?
Over time, your vehicle will invariably hit bumps and holes as you drive along uneven road surfaces, both of which cause uneven treadwear. Aggressive driving and turning hard on corners can also have an effect. The solution is
tyre alignment and balancing.
How often is tyre balancing recommended?
As wheel bearing specialists, we have seen the damage caused by a delay (or complete failure) in getting a tyre alignment. Therefore, we strongly recommend a wheel alignment service at or shortly after 5000 kilometres. Checking your tyre pressure regularly is also beneficial. Even if you can’t always feel the uneasy vibrations, they still might be there. Tyre imbalances can generate excessive heat and wear on your tyres, leading to the need for replacements (and the inherent costs) sooner than expected.
What does the balancing of wheels involve?
It is essential to rebalance every wheel fitted to a tyre; doing so prevents your car from shaking through the steering wheel. We provide this service in our automotive workshop. The process involves removing the wheel from the vehicle and placing it on a tyre balancing machine. We then spin the wheel on this machine for approximately 10-15 seconds to test if it is balanced when rotating.
What else could be causing vibrations while I drive?
There are many possible causes for vibrations other than failure to conduct wheel alignment and balancing:
- Brake wear
- Suspension wear
- Bent or warped wheels
- Axle incorrectly mounted to the wheel
- Engine component wear
- Drivetrain wear
- Wheel bearing wear
